About Ahtel Wines | Wine Importers

Who we are

We have been called tenacious. Obsessed. And maybe even a little...stubborn. But whatever you call us, we’re ardent wine importers who are bringing brilliant wines from the Czech Republic into the hands of wine lovers in the United States.

After a fateful European trip, we found ourselves driving from Prague to Vienna, which brought us right through Moravian wine country. Moravia? Yeah, we needed to learn about it too. As we drank wine in the Old Town Square in Prague (yes we had beer, but we just can’t stay away from good wine), we made friends with the waitstaff and quickly learned about this magical wine land of Moravia.

So we found ourselves taking a quick detour in our rented Opal, and stopping (without appointments) to visit a few brilliant winemakers. And that’s where this story began.

Why might we be called tenacious? Because while most new import companies would rely on brand recognition or regional demand, we built Ahtel Wines to represent brilliant wines in a different way. We have an energy driving us to build awareness about the region and its wines. We want to be authentic in how we represent our winemakers and their vineyards. We pride ourselves on maintaining integrity in everything we do.

Who are we? We’re friends, marketers, foodies, DIY home renovators, golfers, theme-party-throwers, fun car, and motorcycle enthusiasts who have found wines they can’t live without. So to solve our own problem of accessing these wines, we’ve imported them for the rest of the US to discover.

So call us tenacious. Call us obsessed or even stubborn. We’re ok with that.

While our first wines are from the Czech Republic, our growth plans include broadening our portfolio to encompass other underrepresented regions in Central Europe. There are many brilliant wines out there. We hope to get our hands on as many as we can.

Why we’re here

Let’s be honest. It’s not difficult to find a nice bottle of wine. Wine reps drag wine bags over and over again into tasting meetings with you. And most wines are totally drinkable. So what makes you select one wine over the next? We know this business is built on relationships you can count on.

We are your business partners. We don’t succeed unless you succeed, and we know that means with more than just wine. Our decades of business and marketing expertise are at your disposal. We understand the success of our wines lies not in the fact they are brilliant wines alone. But in the fact that they are backed up with the strategy and support to help you not just sell more wine. But build better value to your customers and ultimately drive loyalty.

What’s “Ahtel” mean?

Oh right. That. So the first business we started together was Ahtel Properties. We provided unique lodging experiences for travelers looking for simple yet special options. The name “Ahtel” came from Heidi’s then 7-year-old-at-the-time when he sketched something like:

A(manda) + H(eidi) + Hotel +Motel

So Ahtel was born. As we founded the wine importing business, we looked at other names. But quickly realized the spirit behind Ahtel was grounded in authenticity, uniqueness, and access. So it made sense to us to keep the brand. And as such, Ahtel Wines was born.

“If you’re not having fun selling wine, you’re doing it wrong.”

Importing wine has been one of the most interesting, challenging, and rewarding experiences of my life. And it fits so well with my background in marketing for software startups in the Boston area. I love the challenge of figuring out how to build the business, team, and demand in the market. With extensive experience in marketing and sales, the customer experience and their success is my primary focus. Sprinkle in some bartending, serving, and hospitality management experience and it kind of makes sense how I found myself becoming a wine importer. And it’s been so much fun.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m not learning more about what I don’t know. I’ve completed the WSET Level 2 Award (with merit!) and am currently enrolled in a UC Davis wine course. I’m a perpetual student. Not just with formal courses, but with each conversation with customers, partners, and consumers. Each has something to teach. And I am honored to be working with such passionate people.

“We can solve for that.”

That seems to be my catchphrase. When a challenge comes up, I firmly believe there is always a solution. Sometimes it just takes some creative thinking. Sometimes the obvious solution is staring you in the face. Either way, this business throws challenges at you almost daily and I love tackling them head-on.

In wine importing and sales, the only constant is change. My blended background in computer science and software, with design skills and real estate uniquely prepares me to create solutions and figure out unique ways to solve problems. It’s rewarding when a customer or partner brings a challenge to us - often seeming like a roadblock - and being able to develop a solution that works for everyone.

I’ve completed the WSET Level 2 Award (and scored higher than Amanda - ha!) and have loved learning about wines and regions I never expected to know. This journey has been one of discovery - and I’m thrilled to be on it with you!
